Hackberry, Celtis occidentalis
A magnificent tree, and a great challenge! This illustration was done over a summer season in 2003. This particular drawing was undertaken as a means of getting to know the characteristics of the large hackberry tree in the center and the landscape upon which it stands. I sat about 50 yards away to do the drawing, returning carefully to the same spot at the same time of day on each visit.
This drawing was done from life, and not from photograph. A distinct memory I have from this experience is one of being amazed at being able to see the tree grow. Each week new leaves unfolded and new stem growth reached for the sun a bit further. This presented an obvious challenge. Each week alterations had to be made, especially to the outermost limbs and twigs. The architectural components and farm equipment remained reliably still, save for the tractor changing positions from time to time. If you are afforded the time, I would highly recommend this type of experience, one of returning to the same spot daily or weekly to sit and observe for long periods of time.
The "Hackberry" drawing was part of a larger project that included ongoing study and research on a farm in Loudoun County, Virginia. Many other works were produced during the project, all of which either remain in the private collection of the land owners or have since been sold. Here are some examples of the other works:
